GCHQ National Language Challenge

The GCHQ National Language Challenge is a group competition which consists of a variety of puzzles ranging from easy to extreme.

Each challenge is worth a certain number of points and the more points you gain, the higher you rank in your school, regionally and nationally. Hints can also be used at the expense of points.

You are set 25 hours spanning across 5 days in which you must work together in teams of up to 4 to complete as many challenges as you can. We did most of the work at home, with some being done at school in the mornings and during lunch. This challenge helps students to think logically and gain extra knowledge along the way, like how I now know all the spices in biryani, but most importantly, to have fun!

The challenges range from easy, medium, hard, and extreme. We had 78 to do in total! In the beginning, there were lots of mostly easy challenges, and there became fewer and fewer challenges in each section as the difficulty increased.

There are a mix of puzzles and translation challenges, and the ones we found the hardest were sign language and lip-reading. There were also language-based challenges, but there were also maths, geography, logic, and ones that questioned our general knowledge too. We think that the challenge was difficult, but it was great when we finally completed the challenges and watched our ranks go up.

Our advice for those who want to take part next year, is try not to use any clues as they will help boost your ranks to the top and bring glory to SCGSG!
