Music

Our Music curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong passion for Music.  Our curriculum is inclusive, engaging, and provides opportunities for all students to explore Music no matter the level of musical experience they enter with. We aim to cultivate well-rounded students who appreciate Music as both an art form and a cultural phenomenon, while developing practical skills and theoretical knowledge

Key Objectives:

  1. Creativity and Expression: We aim to foster a creative environment where students feel empowered to express themselves through composing, performing, singing, and appraising a wide range of Music.
  2. Musical Knowledge and Skills: Students will develop technical proficiency in playing instruments, singing, and using music technology. Students will become confident and informed musicians who can critically analyse and appreciate different musical forms taken from a variety of styles and genres.
  3. Cultural Awareness: Our curriculum reflects the global diversity of music, exposing students to a wide range of styles, traditions, and cultures including Brazilian Samba, Chinese folk music, South Asian music, Reggae (Caribbean), Blues / Jazz (origins from slaves in southern USA with West African influences), Celtic folk + West African Drumming, Latin Jazz (GCSE) Indian Classical Music, Indonesian Gamelan, Flamenco, Hip Hop (A level). By studying different genres, including “classical”, jazz, world music, and popular music styles, students will appreciate the role of music in shaping societies and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
  4. Performance and Confidence: To provide regular performance opportunities to build students' confidence, both inside and outside of the classroom. No student is ever asked to perform solo (although we encourage volunteers) but all students are expected to at the very least perform in small groups to their class. A wide range of extra-curricular opportunities will be on offer to develop students’ skills, catering for all levels of musical experience.
  5. Collaboration and Teamwork: Music is inherently collaborative. Through group work in ensembles, bands, and choirs, students will develop key skills such as communication, leadership, and resilience. These experiences not only strengthen musical ability but also foster transferable skills valuable across all areas of life.

Through this curriculum, we aim to nurture students who leave our school with a deep understanding and appreciation of music, equipped with the confidence, creativity, and skills to pursue further study, careers, or personal enjoyment in Music.
