Governing Board

Members

The Members of the Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls Academy Trust (the “Academy Trust”) are a small group with overall oversight of the Trust's affairs. Their key responsibilities include approving the annual audited accounts and appointing (or re-appointing) the Trust's statutory auditors.

Trustees (Governing Board)

The Trustees of the Academy Trust form the Governing Board and are ultimately responsible and accountable for the day-to-day management and performance of the school.

The role of the Governing Board

The Governing Board at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls focuses on three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school;
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, including the effective performance management of staff; and

In order to carry out our role efficiently and effectively, the detailed work of the Governing Board is delegated to and undertaken by several committees, which are sub-committees of the main Board of Trustees. In addition to attending the Full Governing Board meetings, all governors sit on at least one sub-committee. The sub-committees report back to termly meetings of the Full Governing Board at which broader issues are discussed and agreed.

The Committee Structure and Dates for the 2025/26 academic year can be found here.

Finance Committee (Chair - Sundeep Grewal)

Academy trusts are required to comply with the Academy Trust Handbook, which sets out expectations for governance, financial oversight and delegated authority.

The Finance Committee ensures that the school meets these requirements and that robust financial policies, planning and oversight are in place. It also ensures that the school’s funds and assets are managed responsibly and in accordance with legislation, the Articles of Association, the funding agreement and the Academy Trust Handbook, securing value for money and the effective use of resources to support strong educational outcomes.

Audit and Risk Committee (Chair – Helen Booth)

The Academy Trust is required to establish an Audit and Risk Committee, appointed by the Governing Board, which meets at least three times a year.

The committee oversees the Trust’s programme of internal scrutiny, ensuring that risks are identified and managed appropriately. It reports to the Governing Board on the effectiveness of the Trust’s internal control framework, including financial and non-financial controls and risk management, providing assurance to the board and supporting effective governance.

Operations Committee (Chair – Michael Overton)

Academy trusts are responsible for the management of school premises and for ensuring the health and safety of pupils and staff.

The Operations Committee oversees the operational management of the school’s land and buildings, as well as catering provision and digital infrastructure, ensuring that the school environment supports safe, efficient and effective day-to-day operations.

Curriculum Committee (Chair – Alexandra Galan)

The Curriculum Committee ensures that the school’s curriculum, in line with Section 78 of the Education Act 2002, is balanced and broadly based, and:

  • promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development;
  • prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life; and
  • supports the delivery of a high-quality education for all pupils.

Welfare and Access Committee (Chair – Neil Dance)

The Governing Board has statutory responsibility to ensure effective safeguarding arrangements and to promote the welfare of pupils and staff.

The Welfare and Access Committee oversees compliance with safeguarding and child protection legislation and guidance, and ensures that robust systems are in place to support the wellbeing of both pupils and staff, promoting a strong culture of safeguarding across the school. It also has oversight of staff professional development and appraisal, PSHE provision, and matters relating to access and inclusion.

Pay Committee (Chair – Neil Dance)

The Pay Committee oversees staff remuneration, including reviewing and approving pay decisions. It is also responsible for setting and reviewing the Headteacher’s objectives and performance, and for undertaking the annual review of staff salaries, ensuring decisions are fair, transparent and aligned with the school’s strategic priorities.

Other statutory committees

  • Complaints Committee
  • 'First Committee'
  • Appeals Committee

A calendar of meetings is established for each school year. Typically the full Governing Board meets four times during the year, with powers delegated to the sub-committees. The Curriculum Committee, Operations Committee and Welfare and Access Committee meet once per term. The Finance Committee meets twice in the autumn and summer terms, and at least once in the spring term.  The Pay Committee meets as necessary to fulfil its delegated responsibilities: typically, once in the autumn term. The Governors of extra-statutory committees can and do meet at other times if needs arise.

Are you interested in joining the Governing Board?

The Governing Board is a dynamic and evolving body, with members joining and stepping down as their terms of office begin and end. We value the contribution of new Governors, who bring fresh perspectives, diverse skills and experience, and help ensure that the school’s strategic direction continues to reflect the needs of its pupils and wider community.

There are several categories of Governor, each with its own method of appointment. When Parent Governor vacancies arise, parents of current pupils will be invited to apply.

If you are interested in contributing to the leadership and success of the school by becoming a Governor, we would be pleased to hear from you. Please contact Mrs Charlotte Senior, Chair of Governors, for further information.
